Discovery World is saying farewell to Chappy, the beloved Alligator Snapping Turtle.
After many long years of educating guests about freshwater turtles, Chappy is ready to embark on a well-deserved retirement in Missouri. Let’s celebrate the remarkable legacy of Chappy and the countless memories she’s created educating curious minds and charming visitors.

Chappy’s next chapter takes her to a relaxing turtle paradise, where she will enjoy her golden years in the company of new turtle companions. Our dedicated aquarist team ensures that she’ll continue to receive the same love and care that she is accustomed to, making sure her retirement is nothing short of amazing.

Join us as we say goodbye to our beloved friend and congratulate her on her fantastic journey ahead. Let’s make this a farewell Chappy will cherish forever!

Facts about Alligator Snapping Turtles:

  • Currently listed as a threated species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
  • The Largest freshwater turtle in North America.
  • Their powerful jaws have a bite force of 1,000lbs.
  • Adult males can weigh up to 249lbs.
  • This is a nocturnal species. They are most active at night and will scavenge or hunt for food.
  • They have an appendage on their tongue that resembles a worm to lure in prey.
